Matthias Winckhler, born and raised in Munich, studied at the Mozarteum University Salzburg with Andreas Macco and in Wolfgang Holzmair's lied and oratorio class. He received further musicalinspiration in masterclasses with Matthias Goerne, Markus Hinterhäuser, Graham Johnson,Christa Ludwig, Malcolm Martineau, Bejun Mehta, Michele Pertusi, Rudolf Piernay, Peter Schreier,Bo Skovhus and Breda Zakotnik.
He has won prizes at numerous competitions, including the 2014 Mozart Competition in Salzburg and the 2012 Bach Competition in Leipzig.
In the 2025/2026 season, he will make his debuts at the Bach Montreal Festival in Mendelssohn's
‘Elijah’, at Leipzig Opera as “Guglielmo” in Mozart's ‘Cosi fan tutte’, at Zurich Opera in Bach's St.John Passion and at the Magdeburg Telemann Festival, among others. Numerous projects are also planned with the Capella Nacional de Catalunya, the Gaechinger Cantorey, the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra, the Konzerthaus Wien, the Handel Festival Karlsruhe, the Nederlandse Bachvereniging and the Hamburger Michel, among others.
From 2015 to 2018, he was a member of the ensemble at the Niedersächsische Staatsoper in Hanover, where his roles included Count Almaviva (Mozart - Le nozze di Figaro), Papageno (Mozart - The Magic Flute), Albert (Massenet - Werther), Belcore (Donzetti - L'eslisir d'amore) and Tom (Henze - The English Cat). Further opera engagements have taken him to the Théâtre du Capitol Toulouse, the Theater an der Wien and the Théâtre du Champs-Elysées Paris, among others.
Concert invitations have taken Matthias Winckhler to many renowned festivals, such as the Salzburg Festival, the Kissinger Sommer, the Leipzig Bach Festival, the Rheingau Music Festival, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Thüringer Bachwochen and the Mozartwoche Salzburg.
He has worked with the Akademie für alte Musik Berlin under the direction of Peter Dijkstra, the Capella Rejal de Catalunya (Jordi Savall), the Gaechinger Cantorey (Hans-Christoph Rademann), the Bavarian Radio Choir (Howard Arman), the Bach Choir and Orchestra Munich (Hansjörg Albrecht), the Bach Collegium Japan (Masaaki Suzuki), the Camerata Salzburg (Hans Graf), the Freiburger Barockorchester, the Nederlandse Bachvereniging (Jos van Veldhoven), the NDR-Elbphilharmonie-Orchester, the NDR-Radiophilharmonie (Andrew Manze), the MDR-Sinfonieorchester (Risto Joost), the Mozarteum Orchester Salzburg (Matthew Halls), the RIAS Chamber Choir (Justin Doyle), the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra (Jonathan Nott), the UTOPIA Choir & Orchestra (Teodor Currentzis) and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (Pablo Heras-Casado).
As a Lied singer, Matthias Winckhler performs with Marcelo Amaral, Bernadette Bartos, Verena Metzger, Akemi Murakami and Jan-Philip Schulze.
